Job Description:


The Disability Processor I works independently in reviewing and determining eligibility of disability claims under the client’s short-term disability plan. Accurately calculates benefit amount and communicates to claimant. Provides professional customer service to claimant and co-workers. Exemplifies role model behavior through actions with all behaviors related to our Core Values and the Associated Behaviors.


Key Result Areas

  • Reviews and determines eligibility of disability claims under client’s short-term disability plan.
  • Obtains necessary supporting documentation by using telephone and written contact with claimant and authorized personnel at employment.
  • Utilizes appropriate applications to determine plan benefit, compensation rate and expected recovery period.
  • Calculates benefit payments and applies applicable offsets.
  • Processes benefits on a weekly basis and adheres to strict payroll submission deadlines.
  • Adheres to internal guidelines on referring claim to medical review team.
  • Accurately documents claim data online and paper claims when applicable
  • Documents and communicates claim status to claimant.
  • Adheres to industry and client specific turnaround times.
  • Maintains satisfactory productivity.
  • Phone coverage: Log into phone system and be available to answer calls.
  • Cross training in other populations to expand knowledge base for phone calls and backup coverage
  • Demonstrates active engagement in employee recognition by recognizing the right things, at the right time, in the right way, for the right reason.
  • Availability to work some holidays, occasional weekends, and occasional weekday overtime.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed.

Experience and Skills:


  • Attendance and Punctuality - in excellent standing with department policy; is not on a Performance Improvement Plan or had disciplinary action related to attendance and punctuality
  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Minimum two (2) years related work experience with a strong customer service background.
  • Solid analytical, critical thinking, problem solving skills and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate disability plan language.
  • Solid mathematical skills.
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to initiate and prioritize regular work duties and projects.
  • Ability to work professionally and effectively with co-workers, claimants and clients.
  • Attended/applied for Leadership Development Series or Fundamentals of Management
  • Types 45 wpm and computer knowledge.
  • Excellent customer service attitude and professionalism.
  • Demonstrate Accuracy, Customer Service, and Timely Turn-Around (ACT).
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Ability to work efficiently, perform multi-tasking, prioritize tasks, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Possess a high degree of integrity and discretion, as well as the ability to adhere to both company policies and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with security practices and procedures, including HIPAA and HITRUST standards.
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively perform the Key Result Areas with or without a reasonable accommodation without posing a direct safety threat to others or self.
